For decades, with its demand for accuracy and precise pageantry, the honor guard has always been the standard for perfection. With traditions handed down from the military, law enforcement and fire service agencies now use age old procedures to represent their departments and honor their fallen brothers and sisters. The Elmhurst Fire Department Training Academy has created a program to help educated police and fire personnel in the procedures of the honor guard.
The first of the two courses, Organizing Tragedy is a 16 hour class focusing on the needs and preparation of a line of duty death funeral. Taught in a classroom setting, this course looks at the aspects involved with the loss of a comrade. Students learn the importance of being prepared for a loss and what steps to take in the event of a tragedy. Students will have the opportunity to speak with Clergy, Funeral Home Directors, and families of fallen heroes. Developed specifically for law enforcement and fire service agencies, Organizing Tragedy is a must for any department.
Honor Guard Training 101 is a 40 hour course designed to put current and potential honor guard members at the top of their game. With a variety of instructors from the fire and law enforcement services and military fields, this course is taught in strict, well organized setting. Besides drill and ceremony procedures used for years by the military, you will also be trained in job specific duties such as firing party and bell ceremony. The majority of your class time will be spent executing maneuvers and perfecting your skills. All students will have the opportunity to display their accuracy as their pass in review on the final day. Whether you have been an honor guard member for years or inspirer to start a guard at your department, Honor Guard Training 101 is the tool you need for success.
