About the Author

Virginia Stewart, an Elmhurst resident since 1953, has four decades' experience as an academic and public historian. She earned her Ph. D in history from Northwestern University and holds an M.A. from Purdue University and a B.A. from Knox College. Teaching appointments include Northwestern, Dominican University, University of North Carolina at Wilmington and Lake Forest College, where she is currently Visiting Professor of History. The first professional Director of the Elmhurst Historical Museum, Dr. Stewart also served as Executive Director of Glessner House Museum in Chicago as well as Assistant Manuscript Librarian at the University of Illinois Chicago. Her specialties are exhibition, long-range planning, archives and historical administration. She and her husband, Alan, live in Elmhurst's Geneva Highlands neighborhood. |
Awards
Since publication in December 2006, Visionary: An Elmhurst Retrospective has been honored for excellence in content and design by the American Association of Museums, the Illinois State Historical Society, and the Illinois Association of Museums. Reviewers praised the book's "exemplary quality" and called it a "benchmark" for community histories.
