Description of Divisions in Public Works

DESCRIPTION OF DIVISIONS IN PUBLIC WORKS

The responsibility of the Department of Public Works is to maintain the public streets, alleys, and parking lots, public buildings and grounds, street lighting and traffic signals; parkway restoration and trees; the production and distribution of water; the collection and treatment of sewage; the collection of solid waste and recycling, including a public awareness program on the need for recycling; and city engineering support services. In addition, Public Works maintains all city-owned equipment, including police and fire vehicles, and communications equipment. The Public Works Department operates through eight divisions as follows:

Street Maintenance Division

This division is responsible for street sign maintenance, repair and minor reconstruction of all streets, city-owned parking lots, and storm sewer structures within the corporate limits, excluding Route 83, Grand Avenue, Butterfield Road, North Avenue, Lake Street, and County Line Road.


Forestry Division

This division is responsible for the care of all public grounds and trees, including parkway trees. This includes the removal of undesirable and Dutch Elm diseased trees, tree planting, tree spraying, tree trimming, weed spraying, brush removal, parkway restoration, and parking lot and public building grounds maintenance.

Electrical Division

This division is responsible for the maintenance of all municipal streetlighting (excluding Commonwealth Edison lighting), electric motor servicing, radio repair, maintenance of various control circuits, minor air conditioning repairs, traffic signal repairs, and electrical maintenance requirements of municipal buildings.


Building Maintenance Division

This division is responsible for the routine maintenance of all municipal buildings and city-owned rental property. The maintenance areas include heating and air conditioning systems, ventilation, plumbing, janitorial duties, structural and roofing systems, and all repairs and replacements, as well as miscellaneous requests not handled by other divisions.


Utility System Maintenance Division

This division is responsible for the operation and maintenance of water distribution and metering system, and the sanitary and storm sewer collection system.


Equipment Maintenance Division

This division is responsible for the operation of the Central Garage and for the maintenance of all city-owned mechanical equipment including police, fire and public works vehicles, major pump and equipment repairs required for the utilities operation; and mechanical equipment for all public buildings. This division also maintains Elmhurst Park District Equipment as a result of a 1993 intergovernmental agreement.


Engineering Division

This division is responsible for the design and/or review of plans for city construction projects, as well as construction supervision, inspection and administration of all Public Works projects. Utility system records and city maps are maintained by this division. All utility locations requested by contractors or other Public Works divisions are provided by this division. This division also reviews and approves all site plans for private property development.
