Elmhurst Heritage Foundation is pleased to announce that the historic Churchville Schoolhouse, which is owned by the City of Elmhurst, managed by Elmhurst Historical Museum, and supported by the Elmhurst Heritage Foundation, is ready to bring history to life for a new generation of schoolchildren and residents from Elmhurst and the neighboring communities. After an extensive renovation process, the building will soon be open for school groups and public programs with a living history experience for all.

Be sure to come out and see this historically significant building on Sunday, September 26 from 1 to 4 p.m. for the Schoolhouse Grand Reopening Celebration. Download the event flyer here. For more information on the history of the Churchville Schoolhouse, click here.

2010 Vintage Base Ball Game was a smash hitVintage Base Ball Game

More than 500 fans came out to watch the 4th annual Vintage Base Ball Game at Berens Park in Elmhurst, on Sunday, July 18. The game was an exciting one and both teams put forth their best effort. When it was all over, the Chicago Salmon vintage team prevailed over the Elmhurst All-Stars with a final score of 9 to 3.

Thanks to all the hard-working players who gave their time and talents, and particularly to our elected officials who came out to play: Elmhurst Mayor Pete DiCianni and Aldermen York and Kennedy.  Also, many thanks to the enthusiastic fans for coming out to make this our best-attended Vintage Base Ball Game to date. Much gratitude to the Elmhurst Park District for providing the great venue, and to the Comcast crew for filming the game. A special thank you to our announcers, Ken Bartels and Bruce Hill, for providing entertaining and informative play-by-play. Watch your local cable channel 6 for the play-by-play broadcast of this game coming soon.

ABC-TV's John Garcia, an Elmhurst resident, also played in the Vintage Base Ball Game this year.

What is the Elmhurst Heritage Foundation all about?
In 2007, the Elmhurst Heritage Foundation, a non-profit 501c3 organization, was established by the merger of the Elmhurst Historical Museum Foundation (founded in 1992) and the City's Historical Commission. The Foundation’s mission is to stimulate broad-based support for local history, the Elmhurst Historical Museum, and the Churchville Schoolhouse through advocacy, education and fundraising. Since its inception, the Elmhurst Heritage Foundation has planned and implemented several fundraising events and donor campaigns to make significant contributions to achieve these goals. Some examples of this support include:
  • Donation of $18,500 to complete renovation of the historic Churchville Schoolhouse, which will open later this year;
  • Donation of history books to Elmhurst elementary schools;
  • Provision of buses for second-grade student field trips to the Museum;
  • An expanded volunteer program to offset staff reductions;
  • A grant of $79,000 was approved for 2010-11 to enhance Museum exhibits and programs and to support the reopening of the Churchville Schoolhouse.
This citizen-based support group works actively in the community to support the Elmhurst Historical Museum and the Churchville Schoolhouse -- two very important cultural institutions that allow residents and visitors to experience the unique history of Elmhurst. Through strategic planning, donor development, outreach, and essential fundraising, the Elmhurst Heritage Foundation will offer guidance and support to keep history alive for future generations.

supported Dwellings
exhibit with after-hours reception

More than 125 guests came out on a cold winter night on January 21, 2010 to enjoy a wonderful after-hours reception to promote the exhibit, Dwellings: A Study in Residential Architecture. This event, sponsored by the Elmhurst Heritage Foundation, featured a tour of the exhibit with Lance Tawzer, curator of collections; welcoming remarks by Mayor Peter DiCianni; and a wine-and-cheese reception in the Museum's Education Center. VIP guests included many of the homeowners whose homes are featured in the Dwellings exhibit. Guests had many positive comments on the professional caliber of this interesting, original exhibit.
