EAP Update May 2017

Electricity Aggregation Program - April, 2017 Update

While the aggregation program has been extremely successful during the first two years (average resident savings have been in excess of $335), the recently approved ComEd rates are lower than the City’s aggregation’s pricing of 7.51 cents/kWh.

The ComEd rates usually change twice a year. The summer rate is effective June through September and the non-summer rate is for the months of October through May. The non-summer rate was 6.388 cents/kWh (effective October, 2016 through December 2016). The current rate is 6.318 cents/kWh (effective Januray, 2017 through May, 2017). The rates do not include the variable Purchased Electricity Adjustment (PEA) charge. The variable PEA can be a credit or a charge of a maximum 0.5 cents/kWh each month resulting in monthly price swings up to 1.0 cent/kWh. Therefore, the ComEd rate ranged from 5.69¢ to 6.69¢ until September, 2016, then from 5.888¢ to 6.888¢ for the period of October, 2016 through December, 2016, and from 5.818¢ to 6.818¢ for the period of January, 2017 through May, 2017. The PEA has averaged .054 cents/kWh charge for the last 71 months. However, for the last 12 months, the PEA has averaged .052 cents/kWh credit.

Unlike the ComEd rate, 50% of the City’s energy consists of energy from renewable sources. The City’s rate of 7.51¢ includes a premium to purchase this “green” energy.

Residents are free to leave the aggregation program at any time with no early termination fees. Even if residents leave the program, they can later re-join the aggregation at the same rate should they so choose. The City’s aggregation rate of 7.51¢ will be available through the summer of 2017. Should a resident leave the aggregation program and move to ComEd or any other supplier, the resident is free to return to the City’s aggregation program after a period of six months. With new switching rules in effect, you can switch as often as you like, the only restriction is you cannot return to the most recent supplier for a period of six months.

Any resident desiring to move to ComEd should contact Constellation Energy, the City’s current electric aggregation supplier, at 1-844-309-6307. Have your account number when you place the call.
